STOP picking a barrel sauna by the seat count on the listing. One owner of a “6-person” barrel says it comfortably fits about 4 because the heater sits on the floor. Interior depth, heater size and whether a roof is included decide how a barrel actually works.

A barrel sauna is a round, outdoor traditional sauna made of wood staves held together by steel bands. It is the cheapest way to get real 165F to 180F stone heat in your yard, starting around $3,000 at Costco. It also has no wall insulation, usually one bench level, and often no roof. Our top picks are the Costco Almost Heaven Arcadia for value and the Almost Heaven Salem if you buy direct.

How a barrel sauna works

A barrel is built like a wine cask laid on its side. Long staves of cedar or thermowood lock together edge to edge, two round end walls close it off, and steel bands squeeze it tight. Wooden cradles hold it off the ground.

The heater sits at one end or in a corner, with the door at the other end. Benches run along both sides. Heat rises to the curved ceiling and rolls back down along the walls, which is why sellers say barrels heat evenly. A Sun Home guide adds that a barrel holds about 21% less air than a box of the same outside size, but also says “shape does not decide performance” and that the volume difference “does not establish a real heat-up time.”

Almost every barrel on the US market is a kit. You get precut staves, end panels, bands, benches, a door and usually the heater. Two people assemble it in about 6 to 8 hours, per a Costco owner summary.

Barrel sauna pros and cons

Here is what the sources actually say, compared with cabin saunas.

Factor Barrel Cabin or cube Source
Entry price around $3,000 (Costco Arcadia) around $5,000 (Costco Oasis cube) Product listings
Air volume about 21% less than a matching box Full box Sun Home
Headroom Full height only along the center line Full height across the floor Sun Home
Bench levels Usually one A second level is easier Sun Home
Rain and snow Curved staves shed it, but stave seams can leak without a roof Pitched roof sheds; roofing and overhangs matter Sun Home; Sauna Marketplace
Insulation None: the staves are the wall Varies; some brands advertise insulation Product listings
Legroom About 76 in diameter means knee-to-knee seating More room per person Sauna Marketplace
Assembly Staves and bands, 2 people Panel or timber kit, 2 to 4 people Sun Home

Pros:

  • Lowest price for a traditional outdoor sauna
  • Kits go together in a day with two people
  • Curved roof line sheds snow
  • Less air to heat than a box of the same size

Cons:

  • No insulation, so heat-up suffers in cold weather
  • Low benches mean cooler feet, per retailer Sauna Marketplace
  • A roof is often extra, and Sauna Marketplace says “a barrel sauna without a roof will leak, rot, warp, and fail in under two years”
  • Bands and doors may need adjusting as the wood settles

If you are torn between shapes, read barrel vs cabin sauna next.

Barrel sizes: read the interior, not the seat count

Seat counts are generous. What matters is the interior depth (bench length) and the heater that comes with it. Here are the Almost Heaven USA barrels, from the brand and Saunaplace listings.

Model Seats Outside (W x D x H, in) Interior depth Heater Circuit Regular price
Salem 2 78 x 47 x 75.4 39.25 in Harvia 6 kW 240V 30A from $4,485
Watoga 2 to 4 78 x 59 x 75.4 51.25 in Harvia 6 kW 240V 30A $5,184
Pinnacle 4 78 x 71 x 81.5 63.25 in Harvia 6 kW 240V 30A $7,575
Princeton 6 72 x 95 x 77 87 in Harvia 8 kW 240V 40A $8,932
Huntington (canopy) 4 to 6 72 x 95 x 75.4 75 in Harvia 8 kW 240V 40A $8,932

Bench length is the number to compare. The Salem’s interior depth is 39.25 in, while the Princeton’s is 87 in, more than twice as long, for an 8 kW heater instead of 6 kW.

Notice the Huntington. Its canopy porch takes up length, so it has a shorter interior than the Princeton at the same price. Porches look great, but you pay for space you cannot sit in when it is hot.

The Redwood Outdoors Barrel 6-Person shows the seat-count problem in practice. Owner Michael Kummer says his “6-person” barrel comfortably seats about 4 because of the floor heater.

Wood and stave thickness

Barrel walls are just the staves, so thickness is your insulation. Here is what each brand lists.

Brand and line Wood Stave thickness
Almost Heaven USA (Salem, Watoga, Pinnacle, Princeton) Rustic red cedar 1-3/8 in
Almost Heaven Harvia Collection (Kuuma) Thermally modified Nordic pine 1-9/16 in
Dundalk Canadian Timber (Harmony) Eastern white cedar 1.5 in
SaunaLife Ergo (E7) Thermo-spruce 1.65 in
Redwood Outdoors Canadian Thermowood (heat-treated hemlock) Not listed
Costco Almost Heaven models Red cedar Not listed

Sauna Marketplace recommends walls of at least 1.5 in. By that bar, the popular Almost Heaven cedar line is a bit thin at 1-3/8 in, and SaunaLife’s thermowood is the thickest we found.

Cedar resists rot and smells great, but it swells and shrinks with moisture, which is where stave seepage comes from. Thermowood is heat-treated to move less. Sauna Marketplace says thermowood does not move with moisture the way cedar does, though that is a seller claim, not a test result. For a full breakdown, see sauna wood types compared.

Heater sizing for a barrel

This is where barrels trip people up. Most 2 to 4 person barrels ship with a 6 kW heater, and that is right at the edge for a 4-seat barrel in cold weather.

Harvia and HUUM both publish a base rule of 1 kW per cubic meter of room, which is about 1 kW per 35 cubic feet. Harvia adds about 3.9 cu ft for every square foot of glass, stone or tile, and multiplies by 1.5 for non-insulated log walls. Retailer Sauna Marketplace applies the same 1.5 multiplier to barrels, since solid staves are uninsulated wood.

Worked example: a 4-person barrel

Take the Almost Heaven Pinnacle, with an interior of 75.25 x 63.25 x 69.25 in.

  1. Treat the inside as a cylinder: roughly 150 cu ft of air.
  2. Multiply by 1.5 for uninsulated staves: about 225 cu ft.
  3. Add glass. A full-glass door about 2 x 5.5 ft is 11 sq ft, which adds about 43 cu ft. Total: about 268 cu ft.
  4. Divide by 35: about 7.7 kW by the base rule.

Now check the heater’s own rating. Harvia’s KIP 6 kW is rated for 170 to 300 cu ft, and the KIP 8 kW for 250 to 425 cu ft, per Topture’s spec listing. Our 268 cu ft fits inside the 6 kW range, but near the top. Harvia’s guidance is to pick the heater whose range midpoint is closest and avoid the ends of a range.

The takeaway: 6 kW is fine for a 4-person barrel in a mild climate. In a cold one, it is marginal, which matches the Sauna Marketplace report of a 6 kW barrel that would not pass about 150F in mid-20s F weather. If you live where winters stay below freezing, choose a smaller barrel for a 6 kW heater, or an 8 kW model. Do your own math in the sauna heater size calculator.

Wiring

Every electric barrel here is hardwired on 240V. A 6 kW heater needs a 30A circuit and an 8 kW heater needs 40A. Almost Heaven barrels also need a separate 120V 15A plug for the lights. Use a licensed electrician, and check with your local building department because an electrical permit may be needed. Topture puts a detached outdoor 240V run at $1,500 to $3,800 or more.

Roofs, porches and windows

Roofs. A roof kit or cover is the single best upgrade for a barrel in a wet or snowy climate. Here is what comes standard:

  • Included: SaunaLife Ergo (shingle roof kit), Almost Heaven Kuuma (shingles), Costco Ripley (a “rain jacket” cover)
  • Optional: Dundalk barrels ($391 asphalt or $439 metal)
  • Not listed as standard: Almost Heaven USA cedar barrels and the other Costco barrels

Porches and canopies. A canopy shelters the door and gives you an outdoor bench. It also uses length you could have sat in, as the Huntington shows.

Windows. Half-moon rear windows (Costco Vista) and glass fronts look great but count as glass in your heater math. Every square foot of glass adds about 3.9 cu ft of volume by Harvia’s rule.

Costco barrel saunas

Costco’s barrels are made by Almost Heaven under Costco-only model names: Arcadia, Morgan, Sierra, Vista, Emerson and Ripley. They come with Harvia heaters and the same limited lifetime room warranty as Almost Heaven’s own line. The Arcadia was around $2,999.99 in warehouses on October 13, 2026, about $1,500 less than Almost Heaven’s Salem. Costco SKUs have their own specs, so a one-to-one match with a direct model is not confirmed. We map every model, price and delivery term in our Costco barrel sauna review.

Almost Heaven Arcadia (Costco): Best Value Barrel Sauna

The Arcadia is the cheapest name-brand electric barrel we found anywhere. It suits couples who want a real traditional sauna for the least money.

Key specs:

  • Harvia 6.0 kW heater with stones, 240V 30A
  • Red cedar; 78 x 47 x 81.5 in outside; 762 lb
  • Two full-length benches for 2 people
  • Around $2,999.99 in warehouses, per the Warehouse Runner tracker on October 13, 2026, in stock at 123 of 322 warehouses
  • Listing text: 165F to 180F in about 30 to 45 minutes

The Costco page shows zero member reviews, so there is no Costco rating to cite. Owners of Costco barrels, summarized by Care Focus Daily, say the kit arrived intact and heats in about 30 minutes, and complain about confusing instructions and a glass door that fogs.

Pros:

  • Lowest price for a name-brand barrel
  • Almost Heaven’s limited lifetime room warranty

Cons:

  • No roof or floor kit listed
  • Curbside delivery; you move the crate

Costco has no affiliate program, so this is a plain recommendation.

Almost Heaven Salem: Best 2-Person Barrel Sauna

The Salem is the starter barrel in Almost Heaven’s USA-made cedar line, built in West Virginia. It is the pick if you want to buy direct, pick your heater and controls, and get the brand’s full support.

Key specs:

  • Harvia 6 kW heater and stones; options include KIP dials or KIP Smart with Fenix control
  • Rustic red cedar, 1-3/8 in ball-and-socket staves
  • Interior 75.25 x 39.25 x 69.25 in
  • From around $4,485 regular; around $5,484 configured with the KIP Smart heater and Fenix control
  • Limited lifetime room warranty; Harvia heater 1 year on elements, 5 years on other parts

Owners on Almost Heaven’s reviews page most often praise easy two-person assembly, cedar quality and customer service that sends replacement parts fast. Complaints include missing small parts, instructions that are not model-specific and surprise that the heater must be hardwired.

Pros:

  • USA-made with a lifetime room warranty
  • Small air volume suits the 6 kW heater

Cons:

  • Only 39.25 in of interior depth
  • No roof kit as standard

Almost Heaven Watoga: Best 4-Person Barrel Sauna

The Watoga fits small families. With 51.25 in of interior depth, it is shorter than the Pinnacle, so the same 6 kW heater has less air to heat.

Key specs:

  • Harvia 6 kW heater (KIP, KIP Smart or Spirit Smart), 240V 30A
  • Rustic red cedar or Onyx finish, 1-3/8 in staves
  • Interior 75.25 x 51.25 x 69.25 in
  • Glass or half-glass door; no window, port window or vista window
  • Around $5,184; ships in 6 to 8 weeks; professional install from $1,400

Check stock before you plan around it. All heater and finish options showed sold out or unavailable on October 13, 2026. If you need four full seats now, the Pinnacle was on sale at around $6,060 (regular $7,575) that day, but remember its larger volume puts a 6 kW heater near the top of its range.

Pros:

  • Best balance of seats and heater size in the USA line
  • Lifetime room warranty

Cons:

  • Options showed unavailable when we checked
  • No roof kit listed

Almost Heaven Princeton: Best 6-Person Barrel Sauna

The Princeton is the classic long barrel. It is the one to buy if you regularly have four or more people in it.

Key specs:

  • Harvia 8 kW heater, sized up from the 6 kW on smaller models, 240V 40A
  • Rustic cedar or Onyx stained fir, 1-3/8 in staves
  • Interior 71 x 87 x 71 in with two 87 in benches
  • 875 lb shipping weight
  • Around $8,932 regular; Saunaplace listed it at $7,251 on sale on October 13, 2026

Owner data is thin: 5.0 from 2 reviews on the Saunaplace listing. The brand-wide themes from Almost Heaven’s reviews page apply.

Pros:

  • Longest benches in the USA line
  • 8 kW heater matched to the size

Cons:

  • Needs a 40A circuit
  • Roof is optional, not standard

SaunaLife Ergo E7: Best Thermowood Barrel Sauna

The E7 answers the usual barrel complaints. It has the thickest staves we found, an upper-bench design, and a roof in the box.

Key specs:

  • Thermo-spruce staves, 1.65 in thick; thermo-aspen benches
  • 4 people; 171 cu ft interior; 77 in center standing height
  • Shingle roof kit, two floor drains, vents, Wi-Fi LED light bar and two spare staves included
  • Around $5,190 for the glass-door version on sale at Topture (regular $5,999)
  • Made in Estonia

The sticker price leaves out a lot. The heater costs $1,254 (Harvia KIP 6 kW) to $4,765 (Saunum Air 7), freight is $950 flat, and the floor kit is extra. A basic setup lands around $7,400. Retailers also disagree on the warranty: Topture says 5 years, while Sauna Marketplace’s Ergo page says limited lifetime. Get it in writing. Owner data is limited to dealer-hosted reviews, so we have no independent rating to cite.

Pros:

  • Thickest staves and a roof included
  • Thermowood moves less than cedar, per the seller

Cons:

  • Heater, freight and floor cost extra
  • 1,213 lb shipping weight

Other barrels worth knowing

Almost Heaven Kuuma (around $14,132). Part of the Harvia Collection, made in Romania rather than the USA. It uses 1-9/16 in thermally modified pine, includes roofing shingles, and is the Almost Heaven barrel with a Harvia M3 wood-burning option. It costs about three times the USA cedar barrels.

Dundalk Canadian Timber Harmony (around $5,946 on sale, regular $6,999). Eastern white cedar with 1.5 in walls, made in Ontario. Its interior is 222 cu ft, and the manufacturer recommends a 6 kW electric heater, which you buy separately (Harvia KIP and HUUM packages add about $1,300 to $3,300). It also takes a wood stove. Orders are made to order and non-returnable, per a dealer.

Redwood Outdoors Barrel 6-Person (around $6,599 with a Harvia KIP 8 kW). Thermowood with a bundled 8 kW heater, but only a 1-year limited warranty on the structure. See our Redwood Outdoors sauna review.

What barrel owners complain about

Barrel complaints are consistent across brands. Here is what owners and support data show.

  • Missing or damaged parts. Almost Heaven owners report missing screws, trim and thermometers, usually replaced quickly. Retailer Sauna Marketplace, reviewing 178 barrel support threads out of 1,172 across brands, lists hidden shipping damage found after signing a clean delivery receipt. Inspect the crate before you sign.
  • Generic instructions. Owners say Almost Heaven manuals are not specific to their model. Garage Gym Reviews noted the same on the Costco Morgan.
  • Door fit. Sauna Marketplace’s support data shows doors installed proud of the wall, over-tightened door frame screws bowing the frame, and reversed magnetic door parts breaking the seal.
  • Not reaching temperature. Causes include stones packed too tight (tripping the high limit), a poorly placed sensor, and cold weather with a 6 kW heater.
  • Seepage and checking. Sauna Marketplace describes cedar checking and seepage as normal wood movement. A roof helps.
  • The heater shuts off after an hour. Kummer notes this on his Redwood barrel. Harvia’s KIP heaters, for example, have a built-in 1-hour timer, so check your heater’s timer settings before you call it a defect.

None of this is a reason to skip a barrel. It is a reason to read the manual twice, level the base carefully, and budget for a roof.

What a barrel sauna costs

Barrel kits run about $3,000 (Costco Arcadia) to $10,000, with premium thermowood models up to about $14,000. Topture’s catalog range is $4,390 to $11,845. Then add the extras:

  • Foundation: a DIY gravel pad at $300 to $800, or a concrete slab at $800 to $2,500 (Topture)
  • Outdoor 240V run: $1,500 to $3,800 or more (Topture)
  • Electrical permit: $50 to $300; building permit: $50 to $500 (Topture)
  • Roof kit if not included: $391 to $439 on Dundalk barrels
  • Heater if not included: about $1,250 to $4,800

Safety

Saunas appear safe for most healthy adults, per Harvard Health. Heat raises your pulse by 30% or more, and blood pressure can rise in some people and fall in others. Talk to your doctor first if you have heart disease, high or low blood pressure, are pregnant, or take medication. Cleveland Clinic says to avoid saunas after a recent heart attack or stroke.

  • Keep sessions to 15 to 20 minutes; beginners can start with 5.
  • Never use a sauna alone or after drinking alcohol.
  • Drink water afterward and cool down gradually.
  • Keep children out unless an adult is with them and a doctor has said it is OK.
  • If you follow the sauna with a cold plunge, cold water causes a gasp reflex and a spike in heart rate and blood pressure. Enter slowly and never plunge alone. Our cold plunge buyer’s guide has the rules.
